Akur Varadarajan
Interim Chief Financial Officer

Akur Varadarajan is the Interim Chief Financial Officer at Calbright College. He is an accomplished public school administrator with more than 25 years in the education industry. His broad areas of expertise include strategic planning and management, financial operations, budgeting analysis, facilities planning, and leadership.

Akur has held leadership positions of increasing influence with New Haven Unified School District, Salinas City Elementary School District, Ravenswood City School District, and San Francisco School District. During his tenure as Co-Superintendent/Chief Business Officer for the New Haven Unified School District, Akur worked with the five member elected school board to provide leadership for a unified school district of 12,800 students focusing on fair and transparent leadership. He aligned the district’s budget to the district’s goals. He planned, developed and obtained voter approval for a $125M bond measure with a 2/3rds majority. Additionally, Akur reviewed and streamlined business and operations functions saving district revenue and creating a more productive and efficient workflow. Previously, as the Assistant Superintendent of Business Service for the Salinas City Elementary School District, he oversaw the district’s $68M budget. He also planned and obtained voter approval for an $80M bond measure. He created and implemented strategic changes to sustain the organization including business procedures manual, improved bidding and contract procedures, as well as renegotiating and rebidding contracts to save additional funds for the district.

As part of his leadership work, Akur has consulted with Saratoga Union Elementary School District, Berryessa Elementary School District, Monterey County Office of Education, Travis Unified School District and Cupertino Union School District.

Akur holds a Bachelor and Masters of Commerce from Loyola College. As a seasoned Board Member, he has held executive board positions with Alameda County Schools and Northern California Schools Insurance Groups. He also served as a board member for the Monterey County Schools Insurance Group. Moreover, Akur was an active participating member of the Executive Cabinet for the New Haven Unified School District. He continued his professional development completing his CBO Mentor Project certification, CASBO Certified School Business Official certification, and the ACSA Superintendent Academy.
