College Affordability One of The Top Issues Californians Care About

Education is one of the top three issues that matter to voters in the Golden State – and keeping college affordable is one of their top priorities for education.

That’s what a PACE/USC Rossier poll released this month said after surveying 2000 Californians who are registered to vote and collectively representative of the state’s “ethnic makeup, geography and party affiliation.”

Voters’ top priority is actually gun violence, particularly in schools, but college affordability was not far behind – and they are very concerned that not only is college unaffordable for ordinary citizens, but that school admissions policies favor the rich.  40% of those surveyed said that admissions processes are “stacked in favor of wealthy students,” and 26% were uncertain.

California voters are also strongly in favor of extending access to college to those at risk of being left behind.  Two-thirds of voters surveyed support college admissions preferences for children from rural communities or other areas that are often underserved.  Just under two thirds likewise support admission preferences for students from traditionally excluded populations, including blacks and Latinos.

Cabright College was established because Californians are looking for solutions to these problems.  It is California’s first online community college. Our programs, specifically focused on connecting adult learners with upwardly mobile jobs, are all free, so cost is not a barrier to anyone.  While we are open to all Californians, we are emphasizing recruitment among traditionally underserved and even excluded populations. We are meant to be a ladder that working adults from all walks of life can climb towards a better life – without going into debt or having to make difficult sacrifices.
